1. Osram, one of the leading LED suppliers has announced the development of more efficient and brighter red and green LED chips. Osram claims that these brighter red and green devices have been developed in their laboratory, and will be available in production within a year.
Analysis
1. Osram, like many of the other LED manufacturers continues to spend money developing brighter, more efficient LED`s. The interesting thing about this announcement is that most of the improvements in LED`s have been in the area of white light for lighting applications, and not in the area of red, or green LED`s.
2. Red ,Green, blue, and amber LED`s are used in numerous lighting applications particularly in the architectual area. By modulating the amount of each of these colors in a pixel, an almost infinite amount of colors can be created. This is also important when looking at markets such as the moving message panel market where live video can be shown in a sport stadium, or arena.
3. Osram has not announced whether or not there will b an additional cost for the LED`s manufactured with this new technology, nor do they say which package the chips will be assembled in.
4. Unfortunately, the LED industry continues to pre announce both new products and technology breakthroughs. At times this has created credibility issues of r the industry.
